Traditional Scottish pub Edinburgh

"The Abbotsford Bar & Restaurant" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a historic establishment known for its significance and unique charm. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a Scottish pub from the so-called "Golden Era" of pub design, captivating visitors with its elaborately designed interior. The centerpiece of the ground floor is a magnificent, central bar made of dark mahogany, which has remained virtually unchanged since its construction in 1902. The ornate Jacobean-style plaster ceiling and the dark, wood-paneled walls adorned with inset mirrors create an elegant yet cozy atmosphere. This setting makes the pub a popular meeting place for both locals and visitors alike.

Best restaurants in Edinburgh Scotland

Culinary offerings at the "Abbotsford" feature a blend of classic pub fare and upscale Scottish dishes made with regional ingredients. The Steak and Ale Pie is particularly noteworthy, a hearty dish of tender beef slow-cooked in a rich dark beer sauce and served under a crispy puff pastry lid. Also popular is the traditional Haggis, Neeps and Tatties, which perfectly represents Scottish cuisine with its spicy flavor and accompaniment of turnips and potatoes. For seafood lovers, dishes like the beer-battered haddock impress with their crispy coating and fresh taste. The dessert menu tempts with sweet classics such as Sticky Toffee Pudding, a moist cake made with dates that swims in warm toffee sauce and is often served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Historic pubs with charm

In addition to the bar area on the ground floor, the "Abbotsford" features a stylish restaurant on the upper floor known as "Above." Here, guests can dine in a quieter, more elegant setting characterized by high-quality wooden furniture and a pleasant view. The restaurant is particularly suitable for larger groups or special occasions, offering the opportunity to enjoy the popular Real Ales served in the pub. These beers are sometimes dispensed through traditional Scottish "Tall Founts," a method rarely found in Edinburgh today, providing beer enthusiasts with a special experience.

Comida casera y muy típica. La camarera que nos atendió, nos trató fenomenal y resolvió todas nuestras dudas sobre la comida.

The Abbotsford was our 5th stop in a tour of over 17 pubs around Edinburgh. Here we had Zentner IPA and Black GOld as well as a meal of Scottish Angus Beef Burger and Landed Haddock and Chips. Of note is the massive and beautiful wooden bar.
